The school welcomes
students from different nationalities and
backgrounds and strives to achieve excellent
academic standards in a caring and disciplined
atmosphere, and makes sure that each child has
the optimum chances of success and of full
personal achievement.
We give
students a round and sound education and, we
always take into account the specific needs of
our students, by offering extra help when
necessary.
The
curriculum followed by the school is the British
National Curriculum (adapted to the needs of our
students but followed as closely as possible).
The
curriculum is delivered by fully qualified trained teachers selected through on
rigorous standards with a long and solid pedagogy
experience.
Core
subject (Maths, English, Science) are
supplemented by foundation subjects (Humanities,
Information and Technology, Art, music and
Physical Education). All are taught by qualified teachers.
French
is taught by qualified teachers and
introduced from Year 4.
Arabic
and Islamic Studies are taught by qualified and
experienced Arabic teachers.
The
syllabus followed in Arabic and Islamic Studies
is the one set out by the Kuwait Ministry of
Education. Arabic is compulsory for all students
and Islamic Studies for Muslim students. Arabic
lessons start from KG classes and Islamic lessons
start from Reception classes.
Arabic as a second
language is offered for children to whom Arabic language is not
their mother tongue.
Up to
Year 6, the British National Curriculum is taught
by British trained class teachers. Other subjects
such as French, P.E.,Art, Music, Arabic and
Islamic Studies, are taught by specialist subject
teachers.
In KS1(Year
1 to Y3) and KS2 (Year 3 to Year 6 ) teachers work
as a team and plan accordingly for all classes.
KS3 curriculum starts
from Year 7.
The
IGCSE programme is covered in two years; Year 10
and Year 11. The more competent students in Year
10 who complete the year successfully will be
able to directly enter some IGCSE exams one year
earlier in the June or November sessions.
Besides
the core subjects of Maths, English, Arabic
(regular or ASL), Islamic studies for Muslim
Students and P.E., the following options are
offered to our students for IGCSE: Chemistry,
Physics, Biology, French, Business Studies,
Computer Studies, ICT, History, Geography,
Development Studies, English (as a first
language), English (as a second language),
English Literature, Sports Studies, Economics and
Accounting. Some of these subjects can be
taken at core or extended level, according to
ability of the student.
The IGCSE is a world-wide recognized requirement
to join University in Kuwait, in England, or
anywhere else but students have to get the
correct information from the counselors-careers
advisor or Head teachers/teachers within the school regarding the specific
requirement of the university they may join.
A/S and
A-levels are offered to students who want to
enter universities which require one or two
supplementary years of study (click
here for more on scholarship and A-Levels). Please refer
to the list on the brochure and our leaflet on
the university entrance requirements.
During
their schooling at KNES, students have the
opportunity to take a number of exams; young
studens in the junior school can take the Junior
English Tests (JET from AEB),while older students
from Year 6 upwards can prepare to enter the
Cambridge Syndicate PET, KET, FCE English tests.
We also prepare students for the TOEFL
examination (those students who wish to apply to
US and other Universities) .
Throughout the school
class sizes are kept small. The students/teacher
ratio is low to enable students to achieve their
full potential and to profit from close
interaction in a caring, supportive and
disciplined atmosphere.
In the
early years, there is an assistant, along with a
fully qualified and trained British teacher, to
give extra help to young students.
In KS2
(Year 3 to Year 6) students are assessed through
the Spar reading and spelling tests and with the Number
Screening Maths
Attainment tests up to 12 years old which allow us to divide them
into smaller sets in English and Maths to target
their individual needs. Then, this will permit,
when the more competent students are integrated
into the senior school, to try to pass IGCSE examinations one year earlier.
Students
who join our school and are new to the English
language have the opportunity to attend extra
English lessons to
allow them to attend, as quickly as possible,
regular classes.
Students
whose mother tongue is not Arabic will attend ASL
classes (Arabic as a second language) in very
small groups. These classes are given by a fully
qualified bilingual teacher (Arabic - English).
Emphasis
is placed on IT throughout the curriculum from
early years (Reception class) right through to
senior years. IGCSE and A/S and A-Level
examinations in Computer Studies are optional.
Importance is placed on the learning of language
besides English and Arabic; French is taken from
Year 4 to allow students to progress quickly in
this language as early as possible in their
schooling.
The
school encourages the practice of all sports
(indoors and outdoors)as well as swimming, P.E.
& swimming lessons start from Reception class
(see school facilities) are taught by extremely
well trained and qualified British teachers,
female and male, according to the ages of the
students. From Year 3, boys and girls are
taught separately in all P.E. lessons.
Throughout the school year, interschools
competitions are organised on a friendly basis or
through the KFSAC organisation.
KNES
offers assistance to children with learning
difficulties. A SEN (Special Educational
Needs), (physiotherapist and speech
therapist are part of the SEN department unit) is
set up with British teachers specially trained
and qualified. Each student in the unit
has his/her special individual programme,
according to his/her specific needs.
A full range of extra-curricular activities is
offered after school hours for students from Year
1 upwards, such as school choir, environmental
club, chess, computer and internet club, pottery,
debating and public speaking and all sport and
team games such as football, bench ball, volley
ball, basket ball, cricket, dance, table tennis,
swimming, aerobics, etc...
Field
trips are organized throughout the academic year
by all teachers according to their topic lessons
or specific subjects.
Sports
Day, Health Day, swimming galas, concerts and
various shows are organized for the benefit and
enjoyment of students, parents and staff.
Our
school in accordance with the UNESCO
calendar celebrates annually a lot of events
"Tolerance Day", International
Day, week to promote human rights, awareness of
world heritage, protection of the environment and
world conservation strategy, all manifestation
which falls in line with our school philosophy.
Each
summer KNES opens its doors to all students in
Kuwait to a summer camp offering a programme with
a wide range of recreational activities as well
as educational activities such as French,
English, Arabic and IT classes.
Another
feature has to be pointed out: it is a tradition
at KNES before the winter holidays to organise
and raise funds for charity for children in need
in Kuwait or somewhere else in the world. We have
already raised funds for KACCH, Red Crescent,
POW's, anti-drugs committee, Palestine, Cancer hospital for
children in Egypt, 11th September 2001victims etc.
The
school likes to maintain close contact with
parents; consultation parent/teacher evenings are
organized throughout the year, as well as open
days. Teachers are always available for
consultation at any time by appointment. This
partnership is necessary and helps us to achieve
our full task as educators.
All
students at KNES receive a positive, complete
and incentive education, an education of
quality with respect for universal and
fundamental values of morals and ethics, such as
trust, justice, integrity, equality, friendship
and tolerance, in a caring atmosphere with a fair
but firm discipline, to give them optimum chances
of success and full personal achievement.
Education
is a whole which involves not only instilling in
each student knowledge in academic subjects such
as Mathematics, Science, Languages, Humanities,
but also helping each student to express
himself/herself through art, music or physical
exercise. Our duty is to train students, from
early years, to become respectful and responsible
boys or girls who will be good citizens,
conscious not only of their rights, but also of
their duties.
At KNES
we do all that is possible to extend intelligence
and to broaden the mind and to prepare students
to master, while their knowledge is increasing,
the different human, social, cultural and
scientific issues which can occur in a pluralist
community with people from different backgrounds
and nations.
For
admission procedures see the attached papers.
Formal written tests plus a report from previous
school are part of the normal procedure,
depending of course on the year group the
prospective student belongs to, and on the
availability of seats.
Scholarships
are offered to the most able student boys and
girls, these scholarships are called "Omar
Al Gharabally Scholarships" at the
beginning of Year 10 (starting ICGSE course) or
Year 12 (starting A-Level course).
